1.Position: Research & Development Engineer - Material Science

Location: Beijing                                             

Research Topic:

General topics: Material Technology and Science, Applied Physics, polymers, metal/steel and coatings, material investigations and testing.
More specific: material properties, chemical and mechanical properties, metallurgy, welding, advanced isolation materials, support to the ABB China business as well as global ABB business.
Job Responsibilities:

independently perform material investigations and e.g. failure analyses related to materials science
characterization of materials
supporting development projects
customer and material supplier contacts
time planning
testing and experimental work
technical reporting
develop network and cooperation with ABB companies in China and abroad and with external partners
project management

Requirements:

background/studies in Materials Science/Technology
PhD candidates or Master Degree with at least 2-4 years experience above average level in the field of expertise is a pre-requirement sound knowledge and expertise in more than one of the listed fields: metallurgy, chemistry, insulation materials, polymers, metals, ceramics, coating materials, corrosion, thermal design, mechanical and material testing methods, power products and systems, power quality, current limitation, measurement and sensors
good English skills in written and oral and basic presentation skills
analytical, open minded for new solutions, innovative, creative  and action oriented likes difficult tasks and challenges, interested to learn new things enjoy experimental work and high capacity for multi tasking interested in global cooperation and knowledge-sharing practical experience of microscopy, metallography, and/or chemical or mechanical testing or similar

2.Position: Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer, Power Systems
Location: Beijing                                                 
Job Description:

Job Responsibilities:
Execute and initiate research projects in power system, focusing on one or more fields as system modeling & simulation, protection, substation automation, energy network management, insulation coordination, new energy application or power electronics.

Required Qualifications:
Master degree with work experience or PhD in Electrical Engineering (power system, power electronics or control engineering)

Job Requirements:

Highly Creativity expected, initiative, independent
Broad power system expertise and high competence specialist in the focused area. Applicant with relative work experience would be preferred
Problem solving capacity for business oriented research, good connection with university/institute/utilities
Adequate overview of technology trends and good sense in industry demands. Able to explore new technology application.
Experience on simulation tools, such as PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, BPA, PSASP, SIMPOW etc
Good programming practice
Good communicator and team player
Project management skills/potential
Good written and spoken English.

3.Position: Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer, Power Devices

Job Description:
Research for innovative new solutions, energy efficiency, mechanic and electro-mechanic systems, advanced isolation materials, simulation, monitoring devices, Distributed Generation (from rural electrification up to high-end solutions for Mega-cities and solutions based on renewable energy), solid and gas insulation systems, support to the global ABB business as well as specific to Chinese business, scouting for new Technologies, publicizing and participating at conferences

Requirements:

Master degree with work experience or PhD in one of the fields:                                                                   Electro technical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, chemical engineer, or similar fields of expertise - engineers with few years job-experience are preferred,
Above average level in the field of expertise is pre-requirement,
Sound knowledge and expertise in more than one of the listed fields:          
Thermal design simulation, mechanic simulation methods, electrodynamics simulation,
High Voltage Technology, UHV technologies, Power Quality, current limitation, SF6 gas
High Voltage Testing, PD measurement, statistic methods, EMI/EMC, measurement and sensors,
Power Systems and reliability aspects, Rural Electrification Application Knowledge (e.g. combination of solar, storage, control systems),

Introduction of ABB China Corporate Research Center

ABB has been a pioneer in the power and automation technologies industry for more than 100 years. It is almost impossible to record the number of inventions and the 'number ones' ABB has brought into this modern world.

To enhance ABB's market position in China as well as form a brain pool for engineering creativity, ABB Corporate Research China was established in 2005, which provides high level research and application oriented results for the ABB business and customers.

The mission of ABBs Chinese Research in a way is, that engineers try to make products simpler and more robust with clever designs and new materials, more reliable and safer, where safe means foolproof to avoid any of potential accidents, more intelligent to have plug and play solutions.
 
The overall target is to find solutions and new concepts to minimize electric energy losses from the energy generation to the end user - where in Chinese dimensions a reduction of 3% energy losses may be the equivalent of energy supplied to half a million households.

Further in the Power System and Product Research grid security concepts are studied to avoid fragile topology in power supply systems in future with focus on the Mega City power feed-in. A topic on the other side of the coin is the rural electrification for areas where renewables like wind-energy become the dominant factor and especially in this topic strong cooperation with customers and external research institutes is important. Through the cooperation both parties are able to learn and gain profit out of it.

In general the Power Transmission and Distribution research activity covering the range from Power-products up to complex systems gives strong value contribution not only to ABB, it creates value at local customers and impacts the society, which became very dependent from uninterrupted power supply, especially in Cities where more people live in one place than in e.g. Switzerland and Austria together.

A second topic in ABBs Research field is Robotics, where we have even the ABB Robotics Headquarter in Shanghai. In Robotics we are maybe an early bird in a country with low labor costs, but even in such low cost environment Robots started to become a good and cost saving alternative for mass production, especially on automotive industry. From production and sales support to Product Development up to long term oriented Research, the Team in Shanghai has very close cooperation with the R&D Centers in Sweden and Germany, as well as to local Universities.

A third pillar of Development work done in Chinese Research center is the Operational Development activity, where highly experienced Industrial Managers are focused to improve the value chain and production process with implementation of state of the art methods and customization of process tools and methods – with 4 key words in their Agenda: safety – quality - speed and costs.
